Artist's Statement

With a long history of working from observation, the images I choose to paint today are abstracted representations of everyday life in the places I travel and events in my life. Dramatic passages of light and shadow convey mystery and also have strong compositional qualities that define the space.

On a conceptual level, the passages of light and shadow are immensely symbolic to me in their personal associative meanings. Memories of past events and experiences emerge that then give reference to larger social and cultural issues of personal concern. The light and shadow have symbolic reference as well; to good and evil; to hope and fear; and to isolation.

Major representational elements are simplified and abstracted in these paintings to enhance the ambiguity of the space. The abstraction is intended to create enough ambiguity to leave interpretation open while giving enough information for the viewer to associate. The goal is a fine balance between representation and abstraction; to convey the memory and feeling of a time and place without illustration.
